How to Learn How to Jump on a Snowboard

Coast, Pop, Ollie, and Nollie

rodeo540The most basic ways to start to get air are the coast, pop, ollie, and nollie.

Coast

The coast is the best place to start when learning how to control your board and yourself while in the air. A coast when you ride over any change in terrain with enough speed that you go into the air. This is a great way to start to get comfortable in the air. Do this off of as many features as you can until you feel really comfortable.

Pop

Pop is just using your body to help propel yourself into the air.

To practice this just start with standing on flat ground with your board strapped on. Bend at your knees and at your ankles, then explode and jump into the air. Next you can go try it off of bumps, hills, and any sort of change in terrain.

Ollie

An ollie is using the energy of the board to propel you into the air instead of the energy of your body.

First, start up by standing on flat ground. Start to put your weight over the tail of your board, causing the tip of the board to rise up from the snow/ground. You want to feel the board flex, you should feel the pressure that's built up in the board. This is how the energy is generated in an ollie. The next thing you need to do is release the energy and soring into the air. The next step is to go out onto a gentle slope and just ollie as you go down the hill. The more you do it the better you will get at timing and height.

Nollie

A nollie is basically an ollie of the nose of your snowboard. Put your weight forward onto the nose, the tail of your board should rise up from the ground. Then release the energy and spring into the air. Keep practicing this until you feel comfortable.
